The outside of the restaurant didn't look good but we went in anyway since we were out of options. We were surprised at the quality of their food. Appetizers wings were big and hot. Pasties were good. I love the fried fish at the buffet. They were fresh and they were cooked just right. Their soups are tasty too. Their clam chowder were so creamy! Only problem is... it is a smoking environment and I didn't enjoy the second hand smoke from the lady sitting next to our table. Price is good, most dinner entrees are under $10 and the dinner buffet was only $11.99.

Great selection, over-the-top portion sizes, decent food, and good service. I was traveling with 7 other family members... this place worked out well because the menu has something for everyone. The roast beef they were serving at the buffet was to die for. The turkey meal was rather salty. I personally ordered a half size of spaghetti and meatballs. It was huge: plenty for two! Unfortunately, our leftovers went to waste since we were traveling and could not refrigerate them. Overall we had a good experience.

Franks Place is one of my favorite breakfasts of all time. I can honestly say that each time I've eaten the buffet I've over eaten. The usually offer the usual breakfast fair on the buffet. The menu is adequate, the servers usually are efficient. I look forward to going there again soon.

Very tasty, homemade, family style food. Nice little salad bar had 4 soups, and a really good potato salad - I'm not usually a fan - had little red potatoes and dill, and was sweet tasting. Delicious cream of asparagus soup. The Walleye basket was tender, fresh, crispy battered. The boys had breakfast which they declared "really good!"

We ate here based on a tip from a few locals and from reading the reviews on here. I knew right away from reading the reviews and talking to others that this was the place to eat at, and you definitely should as well. First off let's start with the salad bar. While it offers typical items they appeared to be the freshest I've ever seen, and the best quality. They also had homemade potato salad, and macaroni salad. The cottage cheese was cold (the way it should be) and so was everything else. The soups were excellent. I've never seen beef barley with rutabaga and parsnips, and it wasn't lacking in beef or substance. The chicken fajita was hearty full of chicken and flavor. It was slightly spicy, but not hot. The chili was the best I've ever had. It had lots of meat in it and was chunky and was full of tomatoes, beans, and flavor. The meatball was similar to an Italian wedding and was full of meatballs and chock full of flavor. One thing all soups had in common was the fact that they all were equally outstanding and that they appeared and tasted as if they were pretty fresh. Then came the pasty (pass-tee) it was absolutely amazing. Like everything else it was chick full of carrots, onions, rutabagas, potatoes, and beef. I will definitely be eating here again soon and anytime I'm in Sault Ste. Marie. My mom had a pasty as well, and my dad had breakfast. His breakfast consisted of two eggs, diced and fried potatoes, with a slice of Plath's ham, sausage, and bacon, All breakfasts came with a choice of homemade breads of which dad tried the pumpernickel. One thing we all agreed on it was one of the best meals we've ever had in a long time. All I have to say is try it for yourself you will love it and will definitely want to come back all the time.

What a great meal! Fantastic prices; fantastic food. I got the Whitefish dinner, my husband got the UP Pastie-- both had tons of flavor and were very filling. Frank's was clean, welcoming and had tons of options from Italian to fresh Michigan fish.

Nice, friendly place. Came for breakfast (this is very convenient to the Soo Locks tour if you're doing that.). Excellent, standardy breakfast food, great prices and service.

This place is everything Yelp said it was. We stopped for breakfast on the way home from Ontario. The biscuits and gravy were fantastic. Large portion, soft biscuits, and smothered in tasty gravy.

We spent the night in Sault Ste Marie, and chose Frank's place for breakfast. We easily found free parking, right on the street in front of the restaurant. When we walked in, we discovered that a bus of tourists had recently been dropped off to eat breakfast here as well, so there was not a table in the place to be had. Luckily, they also have a counter/bar and there were 2 seats available. Service was quick and friendly. The coffee was good, as was our meal. I went for one of the omelettes, and left full without being able to clean my plate. I would definitely visit Franks again for a meal, and may look to try Dinner there next time.

The restaurant is very clean and the staff friendly. However, the staff is rather in attentive. I ordered the pasty and the crust was chewy and tough. The filling was very flavorful but the beef was very fatty and chewy. While we were there they had a leak in the ceiling and it was falling on the salad bar. They moved the salad bar but did not change any of the items. I will most likely not go back.

Great burgers and meatball soup. If I spend more than one meal in the Sault (or it's winter), I go to Frank's. Fantastic service. The 1919 root beer on tap is outstanding as well.

Would be forgettable except for: Mushroom soup, the chili, and the 1919 rootbeer on draft. If I did this again, I would order the pastie and get the soup and salad bar, but I'd douse the pastie in the mushroom soup instead of the gravy or ketchup (both apparently what you are "supposed to do" based on recommendations of other Michiganders). But that mushroom soup would have given some unbelievable flavor to the pastie! Maybe I'm just not familiar enough with the pastie flavor profile to appreciate it. Or maybe I was just completely stuffed from the open soup and salad bar to really enjoy the pastie. Also, I don't think my pastie had rutabaga in it, I'm pretty sure it was just potatoes. The salad bar was small but pretty much had everything you could want, especially since almost everything else you could eat in any of the restaurants on the Soo strip were fried foods. The veggies were a welcome site!

we went after the boats, and saw the reviews, and could not believe the great salad bar, it had all we needed real fresh, and the choice of 4 homemade soups, and than the entree of the evening, real quick service, and low overhead, with lots of seating. I would go here again! i did not know about the root beer, until i saw the mugs, and they were big!

I wished I had found this place for dinner. But breakfast was great. Was surprised by the $12.00 bill but the UP is about as expensive as Ann Arbor. But the food was really good; place is clean; locals are there; staff very nice.

The family and I stopped in for breakfast while in the Soo. It was good...not great, but good. The portions were big. Everyone left satisfied. They had an excellent selection of breads for toast. I had pumpernickel...it made me happy.

There is no way this should be more than two stars. We only had breakfast but an omelette wasn't an omelette. The pancake batter had no taste. The French toast was made with sour dough bread which gave it a bad after taste. We even had the "homemade toast" which was also sourdough. Yelp kinda let us down this time.

Frank's is a diner with your typical meat, eggs, hash browns, and toast options. I had the skillet which was surprisingly full of flavor. Usually you need to dump salt on something with potatoes and eggs, but this was not the case. What sets Frank's apart from other similar places is their portion sizes. Holy food!!! Come hungry or with a solid hangover...

early on a cold Nov morning, drove there from Manistique to start a road trip down i-75 to Key West. Still dark and early, took a look at what I could see of the soo locks, and then looked around for some kind of breakfast other than the mickey d's and other fast food shtuff, and this place was sitting there fairly close to the locks, and it was nice and warm inside. and it opens early, 6am i believe. food is good standard diner fare, well put-together and tastes good. good and filling, good american fries. the chicken fried steak was tasty, with that nice salty and peppery batter, couple of eggs over easy and toast and american fries. good start to the road trip. didn't see much else open in town at that time. stop in for brekky some time.

It was a rainy Saturday and we were in town to see the Soo Locks, stopped here with another family, 10 of us. Good food, not great. The menu was huge...a choice for everyone. I had a bowl of chili, tasty but a tad salty, had all sorts of veggies including celery and green pepper. My daughter had the hogie and she thought it was the best she had ever tasted. Service was good and wait time minimal.

Don't get the pancakes, they were horrible. I don't know what kind of batter they used. We also got a southern omelette and the egg was rubbery and we didn't like the gravy. I think the sausage used in it was leftover from the buffet. The server was very nice and took the pancakes off my bill. I wouldn't recommend it due to the food.

We had the buffet for $8.95/adult and $5.95/kid. The food was okay but nothing special. We were enticed to try it because the waitress said it included fried fish. When we got up to the line there was no fish. We asked about the discrepancy and were then told that they usually have fish but not today...sorry. Bottom line...okay food, probably wouldn't go back.

We went to Franks for breakfast before heading golfing. It was recommended to us from the worker at the toll booth on the International Bridge. The service was fantastic. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Will definitely go back.

We mainly go to Frank's Place for Breakfast. Good american style breakfasts, I love the Mexican omelet with their homemade chili. They also have the best homemade toast, I love the sourdough. They have a decent buffet on the weekend as well. We've eaten lunch a couple times and have always enjoyed the homemade soup. I would give 5 stars, but sometimes they are a little heavy with the grease.

Great home-style buffet, delicious sandwiches, and a friendly (albeit boring) atmosphere. Loved eating here when I lived in the Soo. I never tried it, but I heard the house brewed Root Beer is great. Great for families or anyone who wants a good meal at a fair price.

We stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning when just about everything else in town was closed. They were offerering a breakfast bufftet which with a 4 year old was right up our alley. I was really suprised to find that most of the offerering were actually homemade from scratch. Such as the bisquits, panckakes and the french toast was made with homemade bread. Yummm.... The service was a little slow but maybe we just hit them on a off day. Also there is no cash register, the note on the table said that the waitres carried a register in her apron so make sure you have cash on hand.

I like Frank's. Its a clean, diner-style place with the typical food in a good variety and selection. Like a lot of the decent restaurants in the Soo, you get a hearty meal at a really good price. Enjoying this kind of place myself, I find the food to be generally very good. I love the meatball soup! They have tasty homemade desserts, too. Specials are usually worth a try. Great for brunch too! I recommend Frank's especially to families because of the great prices and selection on the kids menu. ...Also good for mornings after a night of heavy drinking, because you can get all the comfort foods required at a price that fits a college kid's budget. :D

Had an excellent early breakfast there. We chose the buffet which had a wide selection of breakfast stuff that were very filling and tasty. The price was right as well. Next time I would try one of the breakfast platters that I saw on neighboring tables. Service was prompt & friendly.

I went here and had the breakfast buffet. The food was hot and ready when my friends and I walked in. There was enough food for my friends and I to stay for many days and always have a full stomach. Not only was there an abundance of food, all off the food was very good. The lady behind the counter was very kind and helpful. She filled up our drinks the moment they became empty. This place was very good.

Frank's catered the Soo Locks Tour and the food for the buffet was so delicious that we asked about it. Had both dinner and breakfast at Frank's. Menu has everything you could want - even the traditional pasties (which were delicious!!). Salad bar was extensive and delicious, Meal was abundant and tasty. Breakfast had everything you could ask for and the pancake was bigger than the plate!! Waitress was friendly. Most inexpensive dining in the area with the best food! Easy parking (street) and you can walk over to see the locks. ****Shout out to Brother John and his siblings - Brother John is the tribal Catholic religious in the area - he and his family gave us the heads up on Franks!! Hugs to you and yours, Brother John and thanks for the tip!!

This place is fairly straight forward. They have daily specials, which truly are what a special is supposed to be: Something that typically isn't on the menu, and is served up on occasion, and a good deal to boot. The restaurant has a very family-restaurant/diner feel to it, with bright white colors, booths on one side, diner counter with stools on the other, tables in between. You've got your sandwiches and burgers here, but they also throw in an Italian slant your way, serving up spaghetti, ravioli, gnocci, alfredo, and the like. There really is something that everyone could potentially enjoy here, though I haven't gauged the vegetarian aspect of things. I know you can get a decent salad, but they like to load the salads up with cheese. A favorite aspect of this place is the daily variety of soups available. They have 4: Frank's Chili, Meatball soup (very much in the Italian Wedding soup style), and two other daily soups. The soup and salad bar is a great deal, where you can get your soup, fix up your salad, and grab samples of Frank's fantastic homemade breads. The flavors are fairly sedate; You're not going to Frank's to treat your taste buds to something out of this world. You're going to Frank's to get some decent food for a reasonable price, in a neutral atmosphere. It's a good place to go for a business lunch, as they also provide wireless access, the chatter is very mid-level during the lunch hours, so it's easy to focus on the person you're with and still be able to communicate. I'm not a big fish fan, but I hear their fried fish is pretty good. Haven't ordered it myself.
